What is Routing?

Routing is an application for Route Planner with Weather (Demo Only).

The Route Planner with Weather is a demonstration application designed to combine navigation and weather intelligence into a single, easy-to-use experience. Instead of simply showing directions from one location to another, this tool enhances trip planning by integrating weather forecasts directly into your route. By aligning arrival times with forecast data, users can better anticipate road conditions and make informed travel decisions.

Flexible Route Input

Users begin by entering a starting point and a destination. In addition, optional middle points can be added to customize the journey. This flexibility allows for multi-stop trips, detours, or planned breaks along the way. Whether planning a direct commute or a multi-city drive, the application accommodates different routing needs.

Route Split Configuration

A key feature of the demo is the Route Split configuration, which allows users to divide the route into segments ranging from 1 to 10 parts.

By splitting the route into N segments (where N is the number selected), the system calculates intermediate points along the journey. Each segment represents a projected arrival location and time. This segmentation improves the precision of weather forecasting along the route, ensuring that weather conditions are aligned more accurately with where and when the traveler will be.

For example:

  • Choosing 1 segment provides a simple overview.
  • Choosing 10 segments offers more detailed weather insight at multiple points along the journey.

Departure Time Selection

Users can define their Departure Time in two ways:

  • Depart now (real-time routing)
  • Select a future date and time (within 7 days)

This feature is especially useful for trip planning. By selecting a future departure time, the system estimates arrival times at each segment and retrieves corresponding forecast data. This allows users to anticipate potential weather impacts before starting their trip.

Find Route with Weather

After configuring the route and departure time, users click the Find Route with Weather button. The application then:

  • Calculates the route from start to destination (including optional waypoints).
  • Divides the route into the selected number of segments.
  • Estimates arrival times for each segment.
  • Retrieves weather forecasts based on those arrival times.

Map and Text-Based Weather Display

The results are presented in two complementary formats:

1. Interactive Map Display

  • Weather icons appear directly on the map at each segmented point.
  • Clicking on an icon opens a popup box with detailed forecast information, such as location, estimated arrival time, temperature, and weather conditions.

This visual representation helps users quickly identify potential weather challenges along the route.

2. Detailed Text Summary

Below the map, the application displays structured text details for each segment. This includes:

  • Location information, including addresses for waypoints, latitude/longitude for each way point and split point.
  • Estimated arrival time
  • Weather forecast condition

The text summary provides a clear and organized overview of weather conditions throughout the journey.

Conclusion

The Route Planner with Weather (Demo Only) demonstrates how navigation and weather forecasting can be seamlessly integrated. By allowing route customization, adjustable segmentation, flexible departure times, and synchronized forecast retrieval, the application delivers a smarter way to plan travel.

Rather than reacting to weather conditions after departure, users can proactively prepare for them — making travel safer, more efficient, and better informed.
